What Dental Implants involves
A dental implant is a titanium post placed in the jawbone where a tooth root used to be. Over three to six months the bone grows onto its surface (osseointegration), and it then carries a crown, a bridge or a full-arch bridge that looks, feels and works like natural teeth. Unlike a conventional bridge, an implant does not grind down the neighbouring teeth, and unlike a denture it does not move, stops the bone from shrinking, and lets you eat normally.
What decides the quality of an implant is not the city but four things: the planning (a 3D CBCT scan before anything is placed), the implant system (established manufacturers with a traceable passport, not unbranded copies), the crown (made in an on-site laboratory so fit and shade are adjusted in front of you), and the follow-up (a written warranty and a team that answers after you go home). The honest limits: an implant needs healthy bone and healthy gums, and it needs two visits, because bone does not fuse to titanium in a week. Clinics that promise "teeth in a day" for every patient are either fitting temporaries that must be replaced or loading implants before they are stable. Where bone is short, grafting or a sinus lift adds cost and sometimes a stage. And implants need the same brushing and flossing as teeth — neglected implants get gum disease (peri-implantitis) just as teeth do.

Who it suits — and who it does not
Good candidates

Usually advised against
- –Untreated gum disease — it must be treated first or the implant will fail

- –Uncontrolled diabetes, recent radiotherapy to the jaw, or intravenous bisphosphonate treatment for bone disease
- –Growing jaws — implants are placed only after growth is complete (about 18)
- –Expecting permanent teeth on the first visit in every case; temporaries are the norm until the bone has healed
Techniques and options
Two-stage conventional implant
The implant is placed, covered by the gum or fitted with a small healing cap, and left to integrate for three to six months. On the second visit an abutment and crown are fitted. This is the most predictable protocol and is used for most single and multiple implants.
Immediate implant after extraction
When a failing tooth is removed, the implant can often be placed into the socket at the same time, saving a stage and preserving the bone shape. A temporary tooth may be fitted for appearance if the implant is stable enough; it is kept out of biting until the final crown.
Immediate loading
In selected cases — good bone, high initial stability, usually full arches — a temporary bridge is fixed to the implants within days. The final teeth still wait for integration. It is offered when the measurements support it, not as a default.
Bone grafting and sinus lift
Where the jaw has shrunk after years without teeth, bone is rebuilt with graft material (from €250) or, in the upper back jaw, the sinus floor is raised (from €300) to make room for the implant. Small grafts are done at implant placement; larger ones need their own healing time first.
Guided surgery from CBCT
A 3D scan on day one maps the bone and the nerves; in complex cases a surgical guide is printed so the implants are placed exactly as planned. The scan is what makes the quote and the plan reliable.
What happens on surgery day

Before you travel: send photos and, ideally, a panoramic X-ray. The clinical team reviews them and sends a written plan and price — implant count, brand, crown type, any grafting — so there is nothing to negotiate on arrival.

Visit 1, day 1: examination and a CBCT scan (3D). The plan is confirmed against the bone. Gum health is checked; cleaning or gum treatment is done first if needed.

Visit 1, day 2: implant placement under local anaesthetic — most patients describe it as easier than an extraction. Immediate implants are placed into fresh sockets where planned. Temporary teeth are fitted for the front where appearance matters.

Visit 1, days 3–5: a check, stitch review and written aftercare; you fly home with your implant passport and a plan for the second visit.

Healing at home: three to six months for the bone to integrate. You are contacted at intervals; any concern is answered on WhatsApp within the day.

Visit 2, days 1–5: the implants are uncovered if needed, digital impressions taken, and crowns made in the on-site lab — usually with a try-in for shade and bite before final fitting. You leave with your permanent teeth and warranty documents.
Recovery timeline
Days 1–3
Mild swelling and bruising of the gum, soreness managed with ordinary painkillers, soft food. No smoking, no rinsing vigorously on the first day; from day 2 gentle antiseptic rinses.
Days 4–7
Stitches dissolve or are removed at the visit-1 check. Normal eating on the other side; brushing around the site with a soft brush.
Weeks 2–12
Nothing to feel — the bone is integrating. Keep the area clean; avoid biting hard on any temporary tooth.
Months 3–6
Integration complete; second visit booked. If a large graft was done, healing may extend to 6–9 months.
Visit 2
Crowns fitted; slight tenderness for a day or two as the bite settles. Normal function immediately.
Results — and their limits
Fixed teeth that bite, chew and look like your own, with no denture movement and no strain on neighbouring teeth. Bone around the implant is preserved instead of shrinking.
Well-maintained implants have long-term success rates above 95% in published series over ten years and commonly last decades. The crown is the part that may need replacing over the years, like any restoration.
Premium implants carry a written warranty up to lifetime and zirconia crowns 5 years, issued in your name, on the condition of reasonable care and check-ups.
Implants need the same hygiene as teeth. Peri-implantitis — gum disease around an implant — is the main long-term threat and is prevented by brushing, interdental cleaning and yearly checks with your own dentist.

Every operation carries risk. These are the ones that matter for this procedure, and what is done to reduce, spot or treat each.
Implant fails to integrate
Occurs in a small minority, more in smokers, uncontrolled diabetes and poor bone. Prevented by CBCT planning, correct stability at placement, and not loading too early. A failed implant is removed and, after healing, replaced under the warranty terms.
Infection or peri-implantitis
Sterile technique and antibiotics at placement; long-term prevention is your hygiene and yearly checks. Early gum inflammation around an implant is treated like gum disease.
Nerve injury (lower jaw) — numb lip or chin
The nerve canal is mapped on the CBCT and a safety margin kept; guided surgery in close cases. Numbness is rare and usually temporary.
Sinus perforation (upper back jaw)
Sinus height is measured on the scan; a sinus lift is planned where needed rather than forcing a short implant.
Bleeding, swelling, bruising
Expected and mild; blood thinners are managed with your doctor’s advice before travel.
Crown or screw loosening years later
Torque-checked at fitting; a loose screw is a simple adjustment by any dentist, aided by the implant passport.
Bone graft failure
Uncommon; smoking is the main cause. Grafts are staged when large so that implants go into healed bone.
Complications after you go home
The clinic advises on WhatsApp within the day; any urgent problem is treated locally by your dentist with the implant passport and plan we provide. This is why insurance covering treatment abroad matters.

How to prepare
- 1.Send clear photos of your teeth and, if you have one, a panoramic X-ray or CBCT; list the teeth you are missing or that hurt.
- 2.Stop smoking at least 2 weeks before placement and throughout healing — this matters more than anything else you can do.
- 3.Have any gum disease treated, and get diabetes well controlled; bring your medication list, especially blood thinners and bone medication.
- 4.Plan two trips of about 5 days each, 3–6 months apart. Book flexible return flights for visit 1 in case a graft adds a day.
- 5.Eat well before you travel; you will be on soft food for a few days after placement.
Aftercare at home
- •Day 1: no rinsing, no hot drinks, no smoking, no alcohol; cold compress on the cheek; sleep with the head raised.
- •From day 2: gentle antiseptic rinses, soft food, brushing around the site with a soft brush; avoid the site when chewing.
- •Take the antibiotics and painkillers as prescribed; report swelling that increases after day 3, fever, or a loose temporary tooth.
- •Between visits: normal hygiene, no biting hard on temporaries, no smoking. Send a photo at 2 weeks and 3 months.
- •After the crowns: brush twice a day, clean between the implant and neighbouring teeth with interdental brushes or floss, and see your own dentist yearly. Keep the implant passport with your records.
