What Zirconia Crowns involves
A crown covers the whole visible part of a tooth to restore its strength and shape when a filling is no longer enough: a tooth that has fractured, one with a large old filling, a root-treated tooth that would otherwise split, or a tooth too worn or misshapen for a veneer. Zirconia is the material of choice for most crowns today — a metal-free ceramic strong enough for back teeth, with no dark line at the gum and no metal allergy, made in an on-site laboratory so the fit, shade and bite are adjusted in the chair.
Two kinds are used. Monolithic zirconia is milled from a single block for maximum strength, ideal for molars and for grinders. Layered zirconia has a strong core with porcelain built up on the front for the translucency of a natural front tooth. For the most demanding front-tooth aesthetics, an E-max (lithium disilicate) crown is sometimes better. The choice is made tooth by tooth in the plan, not by a single price.
The honest limits: a crown requires the tooth to be shaped all round, which is irreversible — so a tooth that only needs a filling or a veneer should not be crowned. Clinics that crown every tooth to sell a "Hollywood smile" are removing healthy tooth structure that never grows back. Who it suits — and who it does not

Techniques and options
Monolithic zirconia
Milled from a single high-strength block and stained to shade. Very resistant to fracture and wear — the choice for molars, bruxists and implant crowns. Slightly more opaque than layered ceramics, which matters less at the back.
Layered zirconia
A zirconia core with hand-layered porcelain on the visible surfaces for natural translucency and character. Used for front teeth and premolars where appearance leads.
E-max crowns
Lithium disilicate crowns (from €200) for front teeth where the highest translucency is wanted; strong enough for single front and premolar crowns, not for heavy back-tooth loads.
Digital workflow in the on-site laboratory
The prepared tooth is scanned, the crown designed and milled on site, tried in for fit, contacts and bite, adjusted and cemented — all within the visit. Shade is matched against the neighbouring teeth in daylight.
Root treatment, posts and cores
A tooth that is infected or has little structure left is root-treated and rebuilt with a post and core before crowning. These are diagnosed from the X-ray and priced in the plan; they add a day at most.
What happens on surgery day

Recovery timeline
Days 1–2 after cementing
Mild sensitivity to cold and pressure and a full feeling; avoid very hard or sticky food while the cement fully sets.
Week 1
Gums settle at the margins; the bite feels normal. Any high spot is adjusted by a local dentist or reported to us.
Weeks 2–4
Fully adapted; normal diet. Sensitivity on a root-treated tooth is absent; on a live tooth it fades.
Long term
Brush and floss as usual; check-ups every 6–12 months. Zirconia crowns commonly last 10–15 years or more.

Sensitivity after preparation
Usually mild and temporary on a live tooth; a desensitising varnish and careful preparation depth. Persistent sensitivity is assessed for root treatment.

A known risk of any crown on a live tooth, lower with conservative preparation; a root treatment can be done through the crown if needed.

How to prepare
- 1.Send photos and any recent X-ray; list the teeth that are broken, sensitive or have old crowns.
- 2.If you want whiter natural teeth, whiten first so the crowns are matched to the final shade.
- 3.Treat any acute infection at home if it is painful; otherwise it is dealt with on day 1.
- 4.Plan 5–6 nights; tell us if you grind your teeth so a night guard is planned.
Aftercare at home
- •Avoid very hard or sticky food for 24 hours after cementing.
- •Brush twice daily and floss daily, sliding through contacts; clean carefully at the crown margins.
