What Professional Teeth Whitening involves
Professional whitening lightens the natural colour of the teeth using a hydrogen-peroxide gel applied by a dentist, with the gums protected by a barrier and the concentration and timing controlled. It is the simplest cosmetic dental treatment and, for teeth that are healthy but yellowed by coffee, tea, wine, smoking or age, the most cost-effective: several shades in one session, no drilling, nothing irreversible.
Done in a clinic rather than at home, the difference is concentration and control: stronger gel, protected gums, checked at intervals, and a dentist who first confirms the teeth and gums are healthy — whitening over decay or gum disease hurts and does nothing useful. A take-home tray with a lower-strength gel can be added to maintain the result.
The honest limits: whitening does not change crowns, veneers or fillings, so if you have visible restorations they will look darker afterwards and may need replacing; it does not remove grey banding from tetracycline or white spots from fluorosis reliably (veneers do); and it is not permanent — habits decide how long it lasts. Sensitivity for a day or two is common.

Techniques and options
In-clinic power whitening
After cleaning and a check, a barrier is placed over the gums and a high-concentration hydrogen-peroxide gel is applied to the teeth in two or three cycles of 15–20 minutes, sometimes activated by a light. The shade is recorded before and after.
Take-home trays
Custom trays made from a scan, used with a lower-strength gel for a few nights to maintain or extend the result. Offered as an add-on where wanted.
Combined with cleaning and polishing
Surface stain and tartar are removed first so the gel works on enamel; this alone often makes a visible difference.
Sensitivity management
A desensitising gel before and after, and shorter cycles for sensitive teeth. Sensitivity is temporary and does not damage the teeth.
