What Inner Thigh Lift involves
An inner thigh lift removes the loose, hanging skin of the inner thigh that follows large weight loss or ageing — the skin that rubs when walking, chafes in summer and makes fitted trousers uncomfortable. Exercise firms the muscle beneath but cannot shrink skin that has lost its elasticity; once the skin folds and stays folded, removing it is the only effective treatment.
The scar pattern follows the amount of skin. Mild looseness near the groin is treated through an incision in the groin crease, lifting the skin upward — the scar is hidden by underwear. Significant looseness along the length of the thigh, typical after massive weight loss, needs a vertical incision on the inner thigh from groin towards the knee so that skin can be removed around the circumference. Liposuction is usually done first to thin the thigh and make the skin redrape.
What it does not do: it is a trade of loose skin for a scar, and the inner thigh is an area where scars are under tension from walking and are exposed to moisture, so healing is slower than on the arms or abdomen. It does not treat the outer thigh or buttock (that is a lower body lift), and it does not remove cellulite.
Scars: Horizontal in the groin crease for mild laxity; vertical along the inner thigh from groin towards the knee for significant laxity
Who it suits — and who it does not
Good candidates
- ✓Loose, hanging inner-thigh skin after weight loss that rubs, chafes or shows through clothes
- ✓Weight stable for at least 6–12 months, BMI under about 30–32
- ✓Non-smokers, good general health, no lymphatic problems in the legs
- ✓Willing to accept an inner-thigh scar and a careful, slower wound-care period
- ✓Often after a tummy tuck or as part of staged body contouring after bariatric surgery
Usually advised against
- –Mostly fat with firm skin — liposuction alone slims the thigh without the scar
- –Weight still changing
- –Lymphoedema, varicose vein disease of the legs or previous groin surgery affecting drainage
- –Smokers unwilling to stop
- –Expecting no visible scar or a quick recovery
Techniques and options
Horizontal (groin-crease) thigh lift
An incision in the crease between the thigh and the groin; the inner-thigh skin is lifted upward and the excess removed. The deep tissue is anchored to a strong ligament in the groin so the lift holds and the scar does not pull downward. Suits mild to moderate laxity confined to the upper thigh.
Vertical (extended) thigh lift
An incision along the inner thigh from the groin towards the knee, removing a long ellipse of skin around the circumference. This is the operation for significant laxity after massive weight loss and gives a far better result than a groin-only lift in those patients; the scar is visible when the legs are apart.
Liposuction-assisted technique
Liposuction of the inner and sometimes outer thigh first, then the skin removal. Thinning the tissue reduces the weight pulling on the scar, preserves lymphatic vessels and gives a smoother contour.
Closure and drains
Layered closure with dissolving sutures under moderate tension; drains for several days because the area moves constantly and fluid collects. Compression garments from theatre.
Combination with other stages
Often combined with a lower body lift or performed after a tummy tuck; the surgeon sequences stages so the groin and abdomen are not under tension at the same time.
What happens on surgery day
- 1
Assessment before travel: photos of the thighs from the front, back and inside with the legs slightly apart, standing; weight history. The surgeon proposes a groin-crease or vertical pattern and whether liposuction is included.
- 2
Admission on the morning of surgery after fasting. Blood tests, ECG and anaesthetic review; compression stockings and an anti-clotting injection.
- 3
Markings standing with the legs apart, then checked lying down; the vertical scar is placed on the inner surface so it faces the other leg.
- 4
Under general anaesthesia, liposuction of the thighs, then the skin excision and anchoring, layered closure, drains and dressings. Both thighs are compared for symmetry.
- 5
Compression garment fitted in theatre. Three nights in hospital: walking with assistance from the first evening, pain relief, drain and wound care, anti-clotting injections.
- 6
Discharge to the hotel on day 3. Clinic visits for drain removal (days 5–8), wound checks and the fit-to-fly report.
Recovery timeline
Days 0–3 (hospital)
Tightness and aching in the thighs; walking short distances with small steps. Legs raised when resting. Pain controlled with regular medication.
Days 4–9 (hotel)
Drains out; wound checks daily. Showering with the incisions protected once cleared. Walking increases but sitting for long periods is limited to avoid tension on the groin. Fit-to-fly report.
Weeks 2–3
Desk work with breaks to walk. Swelling of the thighs and knees is normal. Garment day and night. Scars red, and any small openings are dressed daily.
Weeks 4–6
Swelling reduces; walking freely. No exercise beyond walking. Garment continues.
Weeks 6–8
Cleared for low-impact exercise; garment stops. Numbness of the inner thigh improving.
Months 3–24
Final contour at 3–6 months. Scars fade slowly; the inner thigh takes up to 2 years to mature fully.
Results — and their limits
Firm, smooth inner thighs that no longer rub or chafe, with a contour that shows in fitted clothing and swimwear. For many post-weight-loss patients, walking becomes comfortable again.
Scars are permanent. Groin-crease scars are hidden by underwear; vertical scars are visible when the legs are apart and fade over 12–24 months. Scar quality on the inner thigh is more variable than elsewhere because of movement and moisture.
The result is durable provided weight stays stable. Some relaxation of the skin in the first year is normal and is planned for.
Small wound openings and widened scars are more common here than in other body contouring; they heal and can be revised after a year if wanted.
When it is final: Swelling settles over 3–6 months; scars mature over 12–24 months
Risks and how they are managed
Every operation carries risk. These are the ones that matter for this procedure, and what is done to reduce, spot or treat each.
Wound-healing delay or opening
The commonest complication because the scar is under tension from walking and exposed to moisture. Non-smoking, moderate tension, limiting sitting and wide leg movement early, meticulous hygiene; openings heal with dressings.
Seroma
Drains, compression, limited activity; drained with a needle if it forms.
Swelling of the legs and lymphatic problems
Liposuction-first technique preserves lymphatics; elevation and compression; resolves over weeks in most. Persistent lymphoedema is rare in patients without prior drainage problems.
Scar migration or widening
Anchoring the deep tissue to the groin ligament holds the scar in the crease; silicone and sun protection; revision after a year if needed.
Distortion of the groin or labia by a scar pulling downward
Prevented by deep anchoring and moderate tension; corrected if it occurs.
Numbness of the inner thigh
Expected for months; usually improves.
Infection
Higher than in other areas because of the site; antibiotic cover, daily inspection, prompt treatment.
Blood clots
Compression stockings, anti-clotting injections, early walking, no flight before the fit-to-fly check.

How to compare this with a quote at home
Ask any clinic for the same list: surgeon and anaesthetist fees, hospital nights, tests, medication, garments or splints, follow-up visits. A cheaper headline price usually excludes several of these. Then add your flights and insurance to our price for a like-for-like comparison.
How to prepare
- 1.Send photos of the thighs from the front, back and inside with the legs slightly apart, and your weight history.
- 2.Hold a stable weight for 6–12 months. Stop smoking and nicotine 4 weeks before and after.
- 3.Stop aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E and herbal supplements 14 days before; discuss the pill or HRT.
- 4.Bring loose, soft trousers or skirts, front-fastening tops and slip-on shoes; a wedge pillow for leg elevation is useful.
- 5.Arrange 9 nights in Turkey, 2–3 weeks off desk work, 6–8 weeks off heavy work, and help at home for the first week.
Aftercare at home
- •Walk with small steps for the first week; avoid wide leg movements, squatting and prolonged sitting. Elevate the legs when resting.
- •Compression garment day and night for 6 weeks.
- •Keep the incisions clean and dry — shower as instructed, pat dry, and use the dressings provided; the inner thigh must not stay moist.
- •No baths, pools or sea for 8 weeks. Walking daily; exercise from week 6–8.
- •Silicone gel or tape on the scars from week 3 for 6–12 months; sun protection for 18 months.
- •Report any opening of the wound, increasing redness, discharge, fever, one-sided swelling or calf pain immediately. Photos at 2 weeks, 6 weeks, 3, 6 and 12 months.
